FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL
LOANS FOR METAL At the meeting of the Franklin County Council yesterday advice was received that the Minister of Public Works would be recommended to declare the Waiuku-Drury road a main road. An offer was received from the Auckland Harbour Board to erect a new wharf at Pollok, at an estimated cost of £2,500, provided the council contributed £SOO, and formed the approach, estimated to cost £ 500 It was decided to refer this offer to the Pollok settlers. It was agreed to form special rating areas to raise £2,600 for forming and shelling the Kahawai Road, and £1 498 for continuing the metalling on the Maroro Road as far as the Maroro School Road. A report submitted by the engineer showed that considerable damage had been done on county roads, principally in the Hunua and Mercer ridings, by recent floods. Application had been made to the Public Works Department for free grants for repairs. The proposal to divert portion of the Manga - tawhiri Creek to remedy the present position in regard to the flooding of adjoining roads and land had been revised. The estimated cost of the scheme, including a new bridge, was £7,000. The council authorised the riding member, Mr. J. Dean, and the clerk, to urge on the Minister of Public Works the necessity of having the work put in hand without delay.
