HISTORY OF “HAMLET”

LECTURE TO STUDENTS “ ‘Hamlet’ is the story of a. failure that has immortalised the hero,” said the Rev. W. Jellie in a lecture to W.E.A. students at the Old Grammar School last evening. The lecturer traced the evolution of Hamlet through ancient legends and tales of many countries, culminating in the tale of Belleforest, a travelling French story-teller of the 16th century. This man’s story coincided exactly with that of Shakespeare except at its conclusion, which relates the successful issue of the hero’s long-nourished plan of revenge, as also did the legends that preceded it. The history of the story, said the speaker, was preliminary to a study of the play itself.
