SHEEP EASIER AT BURNSIDE SALES
CATTLE FIRM Press Association. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The most noticeable changes at the Burnside stock sales to-day were in respect of sheep and pigs. The former showed a considerable drop, and the latter advanced in price by several shillings. Fat cattle showed no change. About 270 fat cattle were forward, comprising good quality bullocks and heifers, with a fair sprinkling of medium cows. Prices opened on a par with last week’s rates, and at the close of the sale there was little alteration in the average values. The best stuff was a little cheaper than last week, but medium quality sorts were firm. Prime heavy bullocks made up to £l7 and £18; good cows and heifers, £8 15s to £l2; light sorts from £7 10s. Extra heavy ox beef made 37s 6d a lOOlbs; prime light, 40s; prime heifers, 355; cows and light heifers were worth 25s to 30s a lOOlbs. The fat sheep entry numbered about 2,000 head, and comprised good quality wethers and ewes with a fairly heavy proportion of medium and unfinished sorts. The opening demand was quiet, and prices were about 3s below last week’s rates. As the sale progressed the demand became even less keen, and before the last pens were disposed, the reduction in value had decreased by a further 18d. Extra heavy wether mutton made from sld to 6d; light prime, 6£d to 7d; prime ewes, 41d to sd; aged, 4d. A small yarding of lambs was forward, and competition for these was very keen. The price a pound was about 94d. Store cattle were entered to the number of 251, but the demand was not nearly commensurate with the quality. Forward good cows made up to £7, and mediums were disposed of at from £3 10s to £4. Only 61 fat pigs and 36 stores were penned, causing a brisker sale than has been experienced lately. prices advanced by about 5s for fats and 7s for good stores.
