PARK FOR HAMILTON
BIG AREA AVAILABLE (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. The idleness of a large area of flat ground adjoining the Waikato River at Hamilton East has for tome time given concern to the ratepayers of that area, who are loath to see such a large space not put to a useful purpose, but abandoned to the growth of noxicus weeds. Hamilton East Ratepayers’ Association has brought the question again under the notice of the Borough Council, pointing out that since discussion took place with the Beautifying Society and certain work done the property had gone back and was in a very bad state, noxious weeds taking charge and making the area useless and unsightly. The association pointed out that the advantages were so obvious that it was unnecessary to stress them, especially in regard to location, soil formation, proximity to Victoria Street and thickly-populated districts east or west of the river, the area available, the need for a public sports ground, small golf course, bowling greens, tennis courts and croquet lawns. The members of the association were fully persuaded that if run on community lines the area would be self-supporting. It was further suggested that at a very small cost a swing bridge could be erected. Such a structure would be available at no distant date as Sir \V. G. Armstrong, Whitworth Company had a bridge which could be purchased for a nominal sum. The association suggested the setting up of some governing body, by way of a club or incorporated society, which could act a 3 trustees. Another matter in which the Hamilton East have interested themselves is the proposed river path from Memorial Park to the foot of Wellington Street, and this has, also been brought forward for the Borough Council’s consideration
Th€> proposals were referred to the Public Services Committee.
