TRAFFIC BREACHES

OFFENDERS PENALISED A number of offenders against traffic by-laws appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday. The following penalties were imposed with costs in each case: For negligent driving, W. Knox was fined £l. For speeding, E. C. Carlquist was fined £2, 11. T. Whitson £1 and R. Colebrook £3. For dangerous driving, W. G. Mills was fined £2. For failing to notify change of ownership of a motor-car H. Bethell was fined £l. For driving without a licence, Bessie Bree was fined a similar amount and for parking his car too near a corner, L. G. Briggs suffered the same penalty. For driving past a stationary tram W. Phillips was fined £2. For driving without lights the following penalties were imposed:—T. Crab 10s, R. Linkhorn £2, R. Nightengale 10s, R. Parkinson 10s, and C- Scott 10s. A short list of offenders against city by-laws was also dealt with by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M. For leaving cars unattended, B. S. Share and C. A. Woodward were each fined 10s and costs. Hugh Cox-Smith left his motorlorry standing at a distance less than 20 feet from the street corner.—Ten shillings and costs. For leaving a car unattended within a zone area, A. G. Mason was lined 10s and costs. Edward Lye left the court £2 poorer for using an unlicensed heavy, traffic vehicle. D. Lye, upon whom a fine- of £2O was imposed last week, sought to have the fine reduced on the ground that he had since paid his licence from the commencement of the new licensingyear, last April.

The prosecution pointed out that defendant had paid only £4O instead of the fee of £55 required for a vehicle of the weight driven by him. Mr. McKean reduced the fine to £ 5 and costs.
