YOUTH’S IMPRISONMENT
PETITION FOR RELEASE MORE MISCHIEF THAN CRIME (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Seeking cancellation of an order for imprisonment for one year of Herbert Kilburn, junr., of Auckland, and a recommendation that he be placed on probation, Kilburn’s father and 2,000 others have petitioned Parliament. The petition, which was introduced by Mr. W. J. Jordan to-day, stated that Kilburn, who is a youth of almost 18, was found guilty of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime, but the jury brought in a strong recommendation to mercy and the probation officer recommended that the youth be admitted to probation. However, the Judge sentenced Kilburn to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour. The petitioners feel that injustice has been done, as the sending of the youth to gaol would, they say, convert him into a criminal, and the offence was really one of mischief.
