OPERATION AT SEA WITH TOILET SCISSORS

(THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day.

The surgical feat of Mr. Arthur Herrington, a medical student of the Otago University, in performing an operation for appendicitis on board the steamer Port Auckland, off Cape Horn, with a pair of toilet scissors and the aid of a safety-pin, has provoked a question of the Minister of Marine, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, by Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central). Mr. Fraser has given notice to ask if the report of this occurrence is correct. He wants to know whether the Shipping Act permits such a deplorable, inefficient and dangerous state of affairs to exist on any ship, whether passenger or cargo, trading to New Zealand ports.

In addition he asks, if the facts are as represented, that the Minister will take such steps as are necessary, including the amendment of the legislation if required, to render the recurrence of such an experience impossible, and to ensure in addition to a properly qualified medical practitioner, each ship, whether passenger or cargo, shall carry a complete modern surgical and medical equipment.
