CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
APPLICATION OF TRUTH DR. J. M.. TUTT’S LECTURE Aspects of Christian science and the ministry of healing were comprehensively dealt with by Dr. John M. Tutt, in an address at the Town Hall last evening before a large attendance. Asking first whether there was such a thing as personal healing, Dr. Tutt pointed out that there were two answers. No, because the healing and saving power was in Christ, impersonal Truth alone; and yes, because the individual could, indeed must, be healed and saved by the application of truth to the lies of personal sense. Healing the sick in Christian science did not consist of projecting thoughts from one individual to another; it was not person over person, but truth over error. “The claim that man believes error about himself or others is a lie of the personal sense,” said Dr. Tutt. “We command the situation, whatever the problem, if we recognise that all evil is error of belief, not of fact, and we properly reduce all problems finally to terms of individual belief. The problems are largely errors of general belief, which comprise the bulk of the evil with which we have to deal, but even the errors of general belief require of the individual the sense of possession or recognition before they can become to him a seeming reality. “SELF-CONSTITUTED LIES” “All the claims of evil are self-con-stituted lies, masking as personal sense and thus setting up a claim of authenticity in human consciousness. But God, divine Mind, the author of all things, does not allow these claims, not one of them: hence their unreality. “The beliefs that we are the victims of sin or failure; the creatures of circumstance, environment, heredity; the possessors of disease; or that disease possesses us, are all lies which go down before Christian science. If we release error it cannot cling to us. “Nothing occurs without law,” continued the speaker. “The healing of sin, sickness and disease requires the breaking, in human consciousness, of some so-called law of mortal belief. “So powerful is truth, and such is the unity of true being, that it is possible for one individuial, by right mental activity, so to overcome the mesmeric belief of mortals as to annul untrue and unjust laws of matter, and to bring himself his patient to realise the eternality and supremacy of the laws of God, Spirit. The error of belief, though general in mortal mind, is always the individual’s by adoption. and the individual can turn from it to truth, and heal himself and so heal others.”
