WAIKATO LYCEUM CLUB
At the general meeting of the com - ; mittee of the Waikato Lyceum Club | last Monday, it was decided to start a junior branch for daughters or near relatives of club members. Regulations were formulated and adopted which should result in great convenience, especially to country members, whose girls will be able, to enjoy the privileges of the club, when in town, ai a very small subscription. The Literary Circle of the Waikato Lyceum Club held their open evening on Monday last, the 15th. The programme, which was quite different from anything previously given, was arranged with a view to showing the great change that has taken place in women’s ideas and outlook on life since the 18th century. The first item, a paper on Jane Austen, was illustrated with quotations from the novels showing the limitations of women and the 18tli century views, of matrimony, the teaching profession, and the “modern girl” of that time. This was followed by readings arranged in character from Jane Austen, the final scene from Ibsen’s 'The Doll’s House,” to show the ideas that came, with the early days of women’s emancipation and for which, as a writer, he did so much; and the last item, a scene from “Getting Married,” giving some of Bernard Shaw’s amusing and characteristic opinions on matrimony, in great contrast to those of the 18th century. The parts were taken as follow: Jane Austen —Paper by Mrs. W. J. Stevens. Pride and Prejudice Mr. Bennett Mrs. Bell Mrs. Bennet Mrs. Valder Elizabeth Miss N. Valder Kitty Mrs. Guy Sense and Sensibility Mr. Dashwood Mrs. Bell Mrs. Dashwood Mrs. S. Green Northanger Abbey Isabel Mrs. Guy Katherine Miss N. Valder Scene from The Doll’s House Norah Mrs. T.
