LATE MR. JOHN NODDER
A PROMINENT RECHABITE An early pioneer of Thames and Taranaki, Mr. John dodder, died at Papatoetoe on Monday at the age of 91. Born in Sheffield, England, Mr. Nodder was educated at the Lancastrian School, and after serving- his apprenticeship in the file trade came to New Zealand in the ship Caduceus in 1858. Km ployed in roadmaking at Thames he later moved to Wellington. After a time he went to Nelson where he and three other men drove the first sheep from Awatere Valley to the head of the Grey River. In 1864 Mr. Nodder set out for Auckland, but while ashore at New Plymouth he was requisitioned for service in the Maori War. He served with the Taranaki Bush Rangers until 1869 and became a sergeant. He received the Maori War medal. After the war Mr. Nodder founded a bookselling business at Thames which he conducted for 45 years. He then retired and lived at Patatoetoe. A prominent temperance worker and Rechabite, he held, among other offices, the position of 'Past District Chief Ruler of No 1 District of the Order for 20 years. In 1867 lie married a Miss Howell, of New Plymouth, who predeceased him. Mr. Nodder is survived by four sons and three daughters. Mr. Joe Nodder, Mr. M. Nodder, Mi*. L.
