CHURCHES AND UNITY LAUSANNE INTERCESSION
MEN OF ALL NATIONS KNEEL By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright LAUSANNE, Monday. In connection with the World Conference of Faith and Order, a service for penitence and intercession regarding the differences which mar the unity of the churches was held in the cathedral. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Western New York, Dr. C. H. Brent, assisted by French and German ministers. A special feature of the service was that the members of the congregation sang each in his own tongue the hymns, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” written by' Isaac Watts, and Luther’s hymn, “Now Thank We All Our God.” They also recited the Apostles’ Creed, the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer. The Conference considered the question of the Sacraments. Dr. Ashworth, of the American Baptist Church, said the blessing from the Sacraments was derived rather from the faith in which they were received than from the official status of the administrator. Dr. Maldwyn Hughes, of the English Wesleyan Church, pleaded that all the Churches should gather round one communion table to meet their Lord, without asking how He came and only knowing of His presence. TL 2 Professor of Church History in Mansfield College, Oxford, Dr. J' V. Bartlet, said it was around the two Sacraments with New Testament authority, those of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, that most of the differences between the Churches turned. —A. and N.Z.
