SAND BEAT SAVIDAN

AUCKLAND RUNNER RETURNS AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS DIFFERENT TT was the sand which beat J. W. Savidan, the Auckland runner, when he competed in the 10,000 metres event in Sydney. Savidan returned by the Marama this morning, looking particularly well after his visit. He says that he will do only a little track running until the season begins.

Talking of the 10,000 metres race, Savidan said that Hyde and be were out in front until the last mile was reached, and then ITyde went ahead. “A man with such a long stride as I have never had a chance in the sand,” lie said. “Conditions in Australia are different from what they are in New Zealand, and the courses are not the same.” Savidan says that amateur athletics are very popular in Australia, and there is great enthusiasm for harrier running. Pie was asked to compete in the marathon, but he says he preferred track running. The young Aucklander does not advise sprinters to go in for cross-country running, but he says that a little of it improves the stamina of track-runners. He considers that-he has benefited by his visit to Australia, and during the coming season he will be much better than he was last year.
