MARIAN CLARKE
FULFILS HER AMBITION
Behind those deep melting eyes of Marian Marcus Clarke, who portrays the role of Lady Devine in the screen adaptation of her famous father’s famous novel, “For the Term of His Natural Life,” shines a fadeless light of eagerness and intelligence. If ever an Australian actress possessed “it,” it is this tall, handsome woman, whose tireless energy and independence has carried her through the years, ever with a sA goal. That goal was the filming of her father’s novel, and now that she sees her effort at last culminating in a mighty monument to Australia’s new industry, she considers herself the happiest woman in Australia today. Miss Marcus Clarke is an actress of some experience and genius, having toured America with such successes as Somerset Maughan’s much-dis-cussed “Rain,” for thirty-six weeks, and as Madame Rodrieguez in “Sancho Panza" for a similar long-run season As Lady Devine, mother of Rufus Dawes, in “The Term,” which is now screening at the Empress Theatre, Miss Clarke, feeling in complete sympathy with the unfortunate character, has created a role which contributes to an offering which is an artistic achievement in acting and direction.
