BOXING CONTEST
SOME GOOD BOUTS The boxing contests in connection with the tournament were held inMatt Hatton’s gymnasium in the Y.M.C.A. building last evening. The standard of the boxing was high and the bouts were very interesting, though the Auckland team held the upper hand in practically every bout. The local team won four of the five bouts. Mr. G. Watson was the referee and Mr. J. Buchanan the timekeeper. The results are as follows: FEATHER-WEIGHT T. Atkins (Wellington), 9.0, beat C. Ludgate (Auckland), 8.12. Ludgate dropped his opponent in the first round, but Atkins rose and with lefts and rights sent Ludgate down for the count. LIGHT-WEIGHTS A. J. Dobson (Auckland), 10.0, beat J. Izatt (Wellington), 9.9. Dobson was knocked through the ropes in the first round, but in the second scored with some good body blows. Izatt used his left well. The third round was Dobson’s all the way, and he received the verdict. WELTER-WEIGHT R. T. Henderson (Auckland), 10.2, beat E. Mills (Wellington), 10.7. Henderson won all the way, his strong two-handed lighting being too much for Mills. MIDDLE-WEIGHT C. F. Ray (Auckland), 10.10, beat K. Lyttle (Wellington), 11.3. The bout opened at a fast clip, both men landing some heavy blows. Lyttle forced the fight in the second round and Ray used a good straight left. The last round was very willing, but Ray had a
slight advantage and received the award. HEAVY-WEIGHT G. Frear (Auckland), 12.10, beat S. Barry (Wellington), 11.9. This was very tarn© throughout and Frear’s long left leads gave him. the decision. Matt Hatton, who is training for his light with Black next Monday, gave two exhibition bouts with G. Cammick and V. Rickard.
