ONEHUNGA BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL The Onehunga Borough Council last evening carefully discussed a recommendation from the Fire Board, concerning the necessary improvements and provision of requisite fire appliances in eight local licenced buildings in the borough, and resolved that in future all licences would be withheld if full and adequate provision has not been made in accordance with the requirements of the Fire Board. * * * The Onehunga Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club sought permission to hold a series of sports gatherings on the recreation reserve. On the suggestion of the Mayor consent was withheld until a proper programme was submitted to the council. * * * A letter from the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, agreed to include delivery of letters to the portion of Mount Smart Road, between Felix Street and Rockfield Road, by Onehunga postmen. A debate upon the subject was ended by acceptance of a suggestion by the Mayor that the postmaster be asked to provide a map of the whole area concerned in the deliveries. The town clerk reported a heavy slip had occurred on the cliffs at the Esplanade. and had covered the whole of the roadway. All men available were placed on the work to clear it. He suggested that a strongly-built stone wall be erected at that particular because the whole of the hill seemed to be on the move, and if the wall was not constructed further slips would occur, and become expensive items. Immediate consideration is to be given the suggestion,. * * * Auckland City Council, having expressed inability to grant the services of Mr. Pearson, reserves manager, for the purpose of laying out Hillsborough Cemetery,'it was decided to seek such expert assistance elsewhere. * * * The council unanimously agreed to support the Hobson Bay preservation movement. Mr. J. H. Blackwood offered to sell a site with a frontage to Church Street for the proposed women’s rest, at the price of £260: but it was resolved to offer him £l5O for 35ft. by 147 ft., provided the council had the use of the right-of-way adjoining. The council declined to make any donation toward the campaign funds for the erection of the proposed bridge across the Waitemata harbour. * * <* A tender was accepted from Mr. W. L. Cox for concreting footpaths in Wai-Karaka Cemetery at 3s 3d a square yard.
