THE WINTER REFIT

The V class boat Wildwave has been burnt off and received her primary coat of paint. * * * All hands were busy at the Richmond slipway during the week-end. The Kathleen, Doris, Rakoa, Mowai, and The Sun all received attention. c * # The 22ft Logan-built yacht Venus, which is hauled out on the Devonport Yacht Club's site, has had the cabin top removed, and a new one, giving five inches more head-room, fitted. * * * The shallow draft keel boat Colonist has had the blow lamp applied to the top sides. Her crew has been busy fitting a new keel baton. ♦ * * Mr. Kil. Parker’s champion 26-footer Starlight has also had her top-sides burnt off. Both top and bottom sides have been well cleaned down with the steel, and a beautiful surface, so necessary on the racing yacht, is apparent. * * * The big keeler Thelma has been pumiced very severely from rail to lead. Her owners will not attempt any outside painting until the weather becomes a little more reliable. * * * A big team was busy on the firstclass keel boat Heartsease last weekend, pumicing the deck and top sides. Like Thelma, paint will be applied when weather conditions are suitable.

Mr. Fred Lidgard’s keeler Eulalie is undergoing the usual winter overhaul at Bayswater, and should be thereabouts in her class races next season. This craft has a good turn of speed, as her new owner, who will no doubt get the best out of her, will find. That Messrs. Dunning and De Courcey’s launch, Great Hope, needed burning off all over was evident, the overweight she was carrying in the way of paint being considerable. * * * Mr. W. Utting’s motor launch LoewVictor is undergoing a thorough renovation. The 16-20 horse-power Lycoming engine will be dismantled lor overhaul in due course. Mr. I. Spiers’s fast launch Manyana

still shows evidence of her serious collision last season. Her crew was busy overhauling the 100 horse-power Hall-Scott power unit over the weekend. Messrs. Reston Bros.’ steam launch Matarere was hauled out at the squadron’s slipway a fortnight ago. Repairs to the stern gland and tube kept the crew occupied last week-end. * * * The 20ft. yacht Wairere is to change her colour. This well-built little craft will take the water next season with white bottom, black top sides and a gold streak. * * * The 20ft. mullet boat Glenellen has been purchased by Mr. Ron Judd, of the Richmond Club. This is a fine roomy boat with a 9ft beam and was built in 1925. Mr. Judd intends racing her in the Richmond Club’s events this season. She should be a good addition to the 20ft class.
