v > MR. J- R- JOHNSTON, Chairman Auckland Yacht and Power Boat Association. The position of chairman of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-boat Association —the central executive body of the sport in Auckland—requires a tactician of no mean order. The fact that Mr. J. B. Johnston has held that office for six years in

all during his long association with yachting, speaks for itself. Keen on sailing * from his early youth, Mr. Jolmsoon stepped into the ranks of successful yachtsmen, and in his keeler Kotiri, which he owned and raced for many years, won m a n y important

events including the first J. C. Macky Cup in 1907. It was not until 1918 that he first took the helm of office in the yachting world. For the next two years he was chairman of the Auckland Regatta Committee. From 19-0 to 1922, Mr. Johnston was commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and on four occasions has been chairman of the Dominion Conference of New Zealand Yrachtsmen governing the Sanders Cup contests. As a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, he has closely watched in the interests of the sport. The A.Y.M.B.A.’s chainrman made one of the crew of Mr. Alf. Court’s big launch Ruamano, which, in an adventurous cruise beginning on Christmas Day, 1925, completely circumnavigated both islands of New Zealand.
