POWER FOR HOLY LAND

HARNESSING THE JORDAN PROGRESS OF THE SCHEME British Wireless—Press Assn.—Copyright RUGBY, Sunday. Work has been commenced on the Jordan-Yarmuk section of the important scheme for utilising the River Jordan for the generation of electrical energy. The waters of the Jordan between Lake Tiberias and Jisr-el-Mujamich, where, in about eight miles, there is a fall of 130 ft., will be used. A supplementary part of the scheme, which is estimated to produce 130,000,000 kilowatts, provides for the harnessiug of the waters of the Yarmuk, which flow into the Jordan five miles south of Lake Tiberias. The Jaffa, Haifa and Tiberias sections of the transmission system have already been completed. It is anticipated that the Palestine Government will be a large consumer, that the railways will eventually be electrified and that electric power will be extensively used for irrigational pumping.—A. and N.Z.
