Edwin Stars Bowling Contest

CARLTON WINS AGAIN SEVEN VICTORIES ON END The weather has not been at all favourable for the Edwin Stars competition. Since the Carlton team annexed the stars there has only been one really pood bowling afternoon for these well-disputed contests. Saturday afternoon was no exception to this adverse rule. A raking wind swept the green. This difficulty was added to b'y intermittent showers, which variously affected the playing strength and made play very uncertain. However the holders, Carlton —Bates, Deare, Kilgour, Fookes —again proved their prowess on the bowling green by rising supreme over the difficulties presented, and thereby notching another fine victory to their already brilliant record, making seven to their credit. This is a splendid bowling record and the manner in which they are playing presents a strong probability of still more victories being added to their already most creditable showing in this competition. The following is the carlton's score card, which gives each respective pair of players’ score as the heads progressed, in detail. For the benefit of THE SUN readers, the Mount Albert score is arrived at by counting the minuses as pluses and the pluses as minuses.

NOTES AND COMMENTS The challenging team comprised Walker, Dunn. Bromley, G. Clarke, one of Mount Albert Club’s very best teams. From the commencement of the game until afternoon tea adjournment the Carlton men played most excellently. On the other side the Mount Albert team was very weak in play. G. Clarke fought desperately and well to keep an even balance in the score and missed several good openings to do so by fractions of inches. But the score mounted consistently against him, until it became 18—7. At this stage the i\lount Albert lead got the jack and threw a short head. This length seemed to suit admirably the team and they then proceeded to settle down to the game in earnest. From this stage they scored steadily until the score mounted to 18—-15, which meant a good fighting chance for victory. The Carlton men then rallied their forces and scored a three, 21 —15. Mount Albert replied -with a two and a one, which left four for a victory on the last head. As the bowls drew on to the head the positon became equally good for both sides. Carlton was three up on the change-over a'nd i Clarke drew the shot. Byfforcing his bowl and the kitty about 18 inches, there lay the probable four to win. He attempted it, but failed to rake the game out of., the fire, leaving Carlton one up on the head, and the final score at 22 —18. A GREAT RECOVERY It was a great recovery from exceedingly poor form on the part of the Mount Albert team, to a fine possibility of a win on the last head. The team demonstrated thereby the best elements of bowling. The members deserve the highest praise for their work. Clarke displayed a very tenacious spirit as skip. Both Bromley and Dann, as number three and two respectively, characteristically reflected the skip’s commendable qualities, while Walker’s leading in the latter half of the game deserves every commendation.
