PERSONAL. —Captain L. M. Hatfield, marine superintendent for Australia and New Zealand for the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, arrived at Auckland yesterday by the R.M.M.S. Aorangi from V« ncouver. Mr. C. H. George has been appointed chief officer of the Ivakariki, relieving Mr. L. H. English, who will await instructions.
Mr. R. Duffner has reported as having passed for his mate’s certificate, and has been appointed acting-third officer of the Makura for the trip to Wellington. Captain W. D. Cameron, who lias been on holiday, has rejoined the Wahine, relieving Captain B. L. Irwin, who has transferred to the Maori, relieving Captain A. H. Prosser for holidays.
TAINUI AT COLON.— The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Tainui is reported to have reached Colon on Friday, en route from London and Southampton to New Zealand. She is due at Wellington to land passengers on September 5. The cargo is for discharge at Port Chalmers and Lyttelton.
THE CITY OF BATAVIA.— Running under the auspices of the A. and A. Line, the City of Batavia is reported to have sailed from New York on Friday, for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Tasmania. She is due at Auckland about the middle of September. The New Zealand Shipping Company is the local agent.
KAITANGATA SAILS TO-NIGHT.— The Union Company are dispatching the collier Kaitangata from Auckland at 8 o’clock to-night for Onerahi to load for Sydney and Newcastle. KAIWARRA FOR NEWCASTLE.— The Union Company advises that the steamer Kaiwarra leaves Auckland at noon to-morrow for Newcastle, where she will load for Lyttelton. MATATUA POSTPONED.— The departure of the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Matatua from Auckland has been postponed :mtil Wednesday, when she will lesA* L itwerp and London, via Cape Horn. L. D. Nathan and Company are the local agents. WALCHF.REN DUE.— Due at Auckland to-moj ow evening or early Wednesday for Montreal, the Dutch steamer Walcheren» will unload a portion of her cargo here and then proceed to Wellington, Lyttelton. Dunedin, and Australia to complete. The vessel is running under the agency of the New Zealand Shipping Company. HORORATA’S MOV EM ENTS.— Now at Timaru loading, the New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the steamer Ilororata leaves on Thursday for Lyttelton, Wanganui and Wellington to complete. The vessel sails finally from Wellington on August 30 for London, via Panama.
R.M.S. MAKURA.— The Royal Mail liner Makura arrived at Wellington from Sydney early this morning to load cargo and mail and embark passengers from New Zealand. She is to resume her voyage, to San Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete, at three o’clock to-morrow afternoon.
TUTANEKAI IN THE SOUTH.— The Government steamer Tutanekai left Wellington on her periodical visit to Southern lighthouses on Thursday morning. The trip is expected to occupy 24 day* and she is due back at Wellington About the middle of September. The Tutanekai was in Auckland about a month ago and she returned t<> Wellington, via Northern lighthouses and New Plymouth. WARNING TO SHIPMASTERS. The following radio has been received by the superintendent of mercantile marine from the master of the steamer Waipiata: At 1.42 p.m. on Sunday, the 14th instant, in latitude 39deg. 11min. so’ th, longitude 178 deg, 9min. east, Portland Island lighthouse bearing south 47deg. west magnetic 15 miles, I passed a log about 70ft. long and 3ft. diameter, which would be dangerous to navigation. CARGO FROM LIVERPOOL. No further radio has been reueived by the New Zealand Shipping Company from th© master of the Federal steamer Westmoreland. The vessel, which is expected to arrive at Auckland on Wednesday from Liverp will, after discharge here, proceed to Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers to complete. CAMBRIDGE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. To continue her loading the Federal steamer Cambridge arrived at New Plymouth yesterday from Lyttelton. She later loads at Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, Tokomaru Bay and Auckland. The vessel is due here on September 2, and is scheduled to sail finally from Auckland on September 5 for New York, Boston, London, and West of England ports, via Panama. CANADIAN PROSPECTOR TOMORROW.—Arriving to-morrow afternoon with a cargo of general merchandise from Montreal, the Canadian Government Line steamer Canadian Prospector will berth at King’s Wharf to discharge the local portion of her cargo. The vessel, which left Montreal on June 27, goes South to Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru and Dunedin to complete discharge, returning to Auckland about the end of August complete loading for the homeward trip. AORANGI ARRIVES. —The Union Company’s R.M.M.S. Aorangi arrived in the stream at Auckland at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon from Vancouver, via ports, a*hd after pratique was granted berthed shortly after 4 p.m. at the Prince’s Wharf. The Aorangi sailed from Vancouver on Julj r 27 and experienced good weather on her run down the Pacific. Except for four stowaways on board, three being discovered soon after the vessel left Vancouver, while the last one was found after the Aorangi cleared Suva, the voyage was of an uneventful nature. TEKOA FOR HOME. The Xew Zealand Shipping Company hopes to dispatch the steamer Tekoa from Wellington to-morrow for London, Avonmouth, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester via Panama. RIMUTAKA AT OAMARU. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the steamer Rimutaka. arrived at Oamaru this morning from New Plymouth and later proceeds to Bluff, Lyttelton and Wellington to complete her loading. She sails finally on August 31 for Southampton and London via Panama. TAMAROA AT TIMARU. Due at Tlmaru this morning from Napier, the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner arrives at Wellington on Thursday to complete her loading. She is scheduled to sail finally from Wellington at daybreak on August 27 for Southampton and Londion via Panama. MAMARI AND M ATAK AN A.— The Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Mamari has reached Bahia Blanca after colliding with an iceberg off Falkland Islands. Her damaged bow plates will probably be repaired sufficiently to allow the vessel to resume her voyage to London without being docked. The Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Matakana, which escorted the Manuiri after the collision, cleared Montevideo on Friday in continuation of her voyage from New Zealand to London. NEW ISLAND STEAMERS. One of the superintending engineers of Burns, Philp and Co., Ltd., recently left Sydney by the C. and D. motor-ship Port Fremantle for London in the interests of the company, to superintend the building of two new steamers. One is for Burns, Philp South Sea Company and the other for island interests. The new steamers are of a ~\ tvpe, designed expressly to met t requirements of the island trade.
H.M.S. DUNEDIN. —H.M.S. Dunedin will leave Auckland on August 22 for the Hauraki Gulf, where the crew will undergo ten days’ gunnery exercises. The warship will return to port on September 2. EPSOM CLEARED DELAGOA BAY. —The steamer Epsom, en route from Juan de Nova, Mozambique Channell, with guano for New Zealand, cleared Delagoa Bay on August 11 in continuation of her voyage. The vessel, which is under charter to Wright. Stephenson and Company, should arrive in New Zealand about September 10. BARON KINNAIRD LAUNCHED. —At the yards of Napier and Miller, Old Kilpatrick, the steamer Baron Kinnaircl, 34bft in length, between perpendiculars, by 48ft 6in in breadth moulded, by 25ft 3in in depth moulded, about 4,400 tons gross and to carry about 5,760 tons deadweight, has been launched. H. Hogarth and Sons, Glasgow, are the owners, and as many of the “Baron” steamers go to Australia, no doubt the new vessel may alsb be seen there. TRANS-PACIFIC CARGO STEAMERS.—The Union Company advises the following movements of steamers engaged in the trans-Pacific cargo services:— The Waitemata will leave Melbourne to-day for Sydney, to complete discharge of her inward cargo. She is due at Sydney on August 14. The Waihemo left Westport on August 7 for Vancouver and San Francisco. She is due at Vancouver on September 4. The Wairuna, which left San Francisco on August 1 for Fapeeete, Auckland, Wellington. Melbourne and Sydney, is due at Papeete on August IS, and at Auckland about August 29. The Hauraki left Suva on Wednesday for Fanning Island, Vancouver and Sari Francisco. She is due at Fanning Island on August 18. The Waiotapu, which left Lautoka on July 29 for Vancouver and San Francisco, is due at Vancouver on August If*. The forward loading dates at the Pacific Coast are approximately as follow: The Waiotapu will load at Vancouver and San Franc Is g»> during the present month for Melbourne and Sydney. The N\ aihemo will load at Vancouver and San Francisco early in September for Apia, Bluff, Dunedin, Lvttelton, Napier and New Plymouth. The Hauraki will load at Vancouver and San Prancisco in September for Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. The Waitemata will load at Vancouver and San Francisco during October for Auckland (probably Wellington), Melbourne and Sydney.
