MUNICIPAL BAND

SATURDAY’S CONCERT Another of the deservedly-popular concerts by the Auckland Municipal Band was given in the Town Hall last evening. Mr. Christopher Smith, the conductor, has raised the combination to concert pitch and the recitals are a delight to music-lovers. The dim insistence of the tone poem “In the Cloisters,” by Torrance, began the programme, and it was followed appropriately by Verdi’s overture, “The Sicilian Vespers.” A valse-de-concert, “Silver Birds” (La Thiere) was ably played, the piccolo obligato by M.r. Hal. C. McLennan being a delight. The suite, “In a Lover's Garden,” by Ketelbey, was played by request, and met with a warm reception. Mr. Rowland Jackson contributed a xylophone solo, “Orchid Blossoms,” by Underhill. Handel’s celebrated Largo was next played. The selection from “Attila” was fine.
