New Zealand and Australia Join in Sacco-Vanzetti Protest
MEETING IN QUAY STREET
NEW Zealand and Australia take rank now with America, England, Argentina, France, Italy, and Switzerland, in protesting against the execution in the United States of the two death-condemned Italians Sacco and Vanzetti.
Here, a mass meeting in Quay Street recorded its objection to the decision of the American Courts. Simultaneously, in Sydney, a big crowd assembled beneath the Red Flag did likewise.
Sunday mass meetings will be held throughout New Zealand to protest against the pending execution of the two Italians, Sacco and Vanzetti. The first New Zealand protest was made yesterday at a mass meeting in Quay Street. A resolution was passed, and a copy forwarded to the American Consul, Mr. Walter Boyle. It will later be cabled to the President of the American Republic. The resolution read as follows: This mass meeting of Auckland citizens emphatically protests against the contemplated judicial murder of Sacco and Vanzetti, whom we believe to be Innocent. Mr. James Purtell was chairman of the meeting, and Messrs. Jack Basham and Jim Edwards were the speakers. Mr. Basham dealt exhaustively with the actual case, and read the speeches of the men in their own defence at the trial. Mr. Edwards dealt with the international aspect of the case, and showed the discrepancies in American law. and also said that the men were tried because of their political convictions. The meeting closed with the sing-
ing of the “Red Flag” and the “International.” RELEASE OF PRISONERS SYDNEY CROWD’S DEMAND By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY. To-day.
