New Zealand Cup Entries for the New Zealand Cup are due next Friday. Some of those to be entered will be seen out at the Marton spring meeting on September 2 and 3. This provides an opportunity. Consistency Rewarded The Wairarapa sportsman, Mr. C. F. Valla nee, had a real trot of bad luck at Riccarton last week. Peneus was the only horse to win for him, but in placings this owner scored six seconds and a third. Therefore Peneus did not win out of his turn. Miss G. Maher trains Mr. Vallance’s horses at Hastings. Waikato Dispute The latest development in the dispute regarding the Waikato Labour Lay race permit is the arrangement of a conference between Mr. H. R. Sellers, secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, and the committee of the Waikato Hunt Club. Acting on special instructions, Mr. Sellers has left Christchurch and will arrive in Hamilton to-day. The conference will take place this evening at Cambridge. Kawini's Accident Kawini broke down badly during the running of the Grand National Hurdles on Thursday last, and after receiving' veterinary treatment he was found to be suffering from a broken hip, telegraphs our special correspondent at Christchurch. Though it has been known for horses to recover from such an injury, it is improbable that Kawini will ever race again. Pakuranga Hunt Meeting Tho annual race meeting of the Pakuranga Hunt Club is to be held at Ellerslie on Saturday next, the first event commencing at about 11.30 a.m. Prior to that a two-year-old parade is to be held, starting at 10.30 a.m. For the races excellent acceptances have been received, and on appearances there should be some excellent racing and jumping on Saturday. Something Wrong? While the Metropolitan Trotting Club showed an increase of £15,000 on the meeting held at Addington on the Saturday, Wednesday and Friday, the Canterbury Jockey Club’s totalisator returns for the Tuesday, Thursday-and Saturday decreased £ 13,000. Despite the fact that the C.J.C. handled about £II,OOO more than the trotting body, the result cannot be viewed with satisfaction by members of the C.J.C. Zircon and Royal Form Out Zircon was going well till he struck a fence hard during the running of the Lincoln Steeples, when he dislodged his rider. He was going particularly well at the time, and may have been hard to beat. He injured a stifle badly, and it will be a long while before he will be able to race again. His stable mate, Royal Form, will be turned out for a good spell when he returns home. His trainer will leave here on Tuesday for Auckland. More Peculiar Rules In England credit betting in shops is legal; cash is not. In consequence a police officer was on the premises some time ago when the mail was deli vered at the office of one of London’s leading advertising bookmakers. He found letters containing 31 cash bets, and in a second mail the same day 48 t ash bets. The bookmaker was prosecuted. and was fined £IOO and £lO 10s costs. And yet anybodj' with

sufficient good credit could ring up that bookmaker and legally invest £ 1,000 on a race. Arrived for Hunt Meeting Just John and Mashoar have arrived at Ellerslie, and both look in good condition. The first-named will be ridden on Saturday by K. Eager. Mashoar is a full brother to the ’chaser Bahadur. j Preparing for Spring Since coming to Ellerslie Yaqui find Lord Bruce have been getting through some useful work, and should be in racing trim by the time the spring meetings arrive.
