America Defeats Britain at Tennis
WOMEN AT PLAY WIGHTMAN CUP CONTEST By Cable. — Press Association.—Copyright NEW YORK, Saturday. The match for the Wight man Cup, between teams of British and American women lawn tennis players, was won by the American team. Play took place yesterday and today at Forest Hill. In the first match, Miss Helen Wills, America, the present British open champion, defeated Miss Joan Fry, Brtain, 6—2, 6—o. Mrs. M. Mallory, America, defeated Mrs. Godfrey, Britain, 6 —4, 6 —2. In the doubles, Mrs. J. Hill and Miss Sterry, Britain, defeated Miss Goss and Mrs. Chapin, America, 5 —7, 7—o, As a result of the first day’s play America led by two matches to one. In the matches to-day, Miss Betty Nuthall, Britain, defeated Miss Helen Jacobs, America, 6—3, 2 —6, 6—l. Miss Wills defeated Mrs. Godfree, C—l, 6—l. Mrs. Mallory defeated Miss Fry, 6—2, 11—9. In the doubles, Miss Wills and M.rs. Hotchkiss defeated Mrs. Godfree and Miss I-larvey, 6—4, 4—6, 6—3. —A. and N.Z.
