ELIGIBLES FOR NEW ZEALAND CUP

OWNERS’ ATTENTION DIRECTED TOWARD BIG TROTTING RACE Now that the general excitement of the successful national trotting: carnival has subsided, owners whose candidates have succeeded in qualifying for the biggest prize in the Dominion —the New Zealand Cup—will turn their attention to the date of entries for the great event, which is Thursday next. Horses that have traversed two miles in 4.28 or better are qualified to take part in the race for he 3,000 sovereigns and handsome cup, while those who have been assessed by the handicapper at 4.28 or under are also eligible to have their names on the entrance list. 29 ELIGIBLE Twenty-nine horses can lay claim to the right to contest the honour this year, 23 of whom have gained the privilege through registering the standard time, or improving upon it, while the remaining half-dozen have come “within the law” through the opinion placed upon their capabilities by handicappers. This large number of eligibles proves that the standard of the light-harness sport has improved considerably in the Dominion, and that there is a general improvement in the quality of New

Zealand stock. It also forcibly indicates the necessity of a further tightening up of the time limit, for the Dominion’s principal event, a question that will perforce require to be tackled fairly and squarely before another season passes hence. Although Auckland can only boast of one provincially-owned and trained, and one locally-owned but Canterbuij trained, candidates eligible for the three thousand pounder, with no chance o_ the former taking any part in the affair, interest will be maintained throughout the district right up to the great deciding day in November. LATEST ASPIRANT Very little change has been effected to the list of eligibles, published some time ago in THE SUN, during the progress of the National Carnival .iust concluded, and only one pacer. Audacious, succeeded in qualifying, having been handicapped on 4.28 after his dashing victory in the August Handicap on the opening day. Imprint and Loganwood. two of the solid type, who were eligible by virtue of the adjuster’s opinion, have improved their position through winding up the olock to 4.25 3-5 and 4.27 2-5 respectively. Jlad the track on the concluding day been as fast as on either of the previous days, it is quite on the cards that Peterwah, the bold trotter from Gisborne, who ran second to Imprint in the National Cup, would have s it his cup status. In the complete list published nc»ow will be noticed the names of some entitled to sign the entry register, who will probably be marked absent, notably Nelson Derby (who has taken up stud dutv) and Jewel, who has retired. Sheik, a former winner, and Pedro Pronto, are now being trained in Sydney and may not be accorded a nomination.
