TAXI LICENCES
CONTROVERSY IN THAMES The reading of an ultimatum from the Thames Borough Council to the effect that, following a conference between the Mayor of Thames and the chairman of the county council, the borough council had decided not to insist on taxi licences being taken out in the borough by residents of the county, raised a long-standing controversial issue at the meeting of the Thames County Council on Thursday. Councillor Cribb considered all taxidrivers using the county roads should take out a licence with the county council, no matter where their place of residence. A resolution to this effect 'was carried unanimously. Commenting on this decision, Mr. H. Lowe, the chairman, said that in the face of the borough council’s offer it might seem a rather harsh measure, but motor-car drivers had themselves to blame for the position that had arisen, on account of their excessive speed on county roads. Car services were increasing, said the chairman, and the roads were damaged to such an extent that the cost of maintenance was prohibitive, and quite beyond ordinary revenue resources.
