CAR BADLY SMASHED ON WAY FROM RACES

DRIVER SEVERELY HURT ( Special To THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Caught between two trams on Riccarton Road at dusk this evening, a motor-car driven by a man named Meehan was badly damaged, and the driver was taken to hospital suffering from a wound in the head and concussion. A passenger who was riding in the car escaped without serious injury. The accident occurred at the bend in the road near Hagley Park cricket grounds as the car was coming from the Riccarton racecourse to the city. The car was crushed like a concertina, being bent in from both sides. One side was stripped of mudguards and running board and one of the front wheels torn off. The remains of the wheel, together with the front spring, were lying about six feet away. The hood was torn and the windscreen shattered, the broken glass being scattered for a distance of 10 yards. The accident occurred just as all the racegoers were returning, and a long string of crowded cars was held up for some time. It was reported from the hospital to-night that the condition of the injured man was satisfactory.
