SOCIAL JOTTINGS FROM THE KING COUNTRY

At the residence of Mrs. M. Williams, Ohura, a few evenings ago, a most pleasant little social evening was spent. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. F. Gleeson, Misses Muir, Campbell, MacKenzie, Treacy, Woofe, Marjorie and Mavis Esdaile, and Messrs. Gow, Purcell, Wimsett, Woodruffe, Brady, Sliutt, Hawkes, Speakman, MacClure and Ross. The dining room was cleared and jolly dancing indulged in till a late Jiour. The Ohura Ladies’ Hockey Club last week held a dance at Ohura with the object of assisting their finances. The public rallied round the girls and the function was a qualified success. The hall was decorated by the members of the club and the charming effect produced reflected credit on those responsible. The music was supplied by Mrs. A. Armstrong and dancing was kept up till the late hours. A dainty supper was dispensed by the hockey girls, with the kindly assistance of the Ohura ladies. * * * A dance in aid of the funds for the new playing area for the Taumarunui Public School was held on Wednesday evening and was a great success, the event being well patronised. The orchestra, comprising Miss Slattery piano), Messrs. J. Slattery (violin), F. Woodmass (bass viola), A. J. Richards (saxophone), C. McKenzie (drums), and R. Lee (cornet), supplied appropriate music for the dancing, extras being rendered by Mr. T. Bell, Mr. N. Todd, as M.C., kept things going with a swing. As an interlude to the programme several poi dances were given by a band of Maori maidens, these graceful renderings proving very popular. Mr. T. Driffil, chairman of the school committee, returned thanks to all who had assisted in making the dance a success. * * * With a nett score of 68, Mrs. Somerville, of the Taumarunui Ladies’ Golf Club, succeeded in annexing the House and Daking trophy. Mrs. Batt was second with a nett score of 70, and Miss MacPherson jthird with 72. The Taumarunui High School hockey girls’ team, which has made a name for itself this season, easily defeated a team of town players on Wednesday afternoon, with a score of five to nil, the goals being registered for School by E. Carlson (3), A. Aitken (1), and D. Stevenson (1).

Y.W.C.A. NEWS BUSINESS GIRLS’ CLUB ANNUAL MEETING Mrs. A. M. Ferguson presided over the 16th annual meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Business Girls’ Club, which was held in the clubrooms on Tuesday evening. After the general business was disposed of an enjoyable evening was spent in progressive games and competitions, and a number of songs were given by Miss Simms. Miss A. G. Green, the lion, secretary, in submitting the annual report, spoke of the loss sustained by the club through the death of Miss May Mills, which occurred in December. Miss Mills had been an active member of the committee for some years, and was one of the executive vice-presidents. She was a most energetic worker, and was highly respected and liked by all the members. Thanks were tendered to the club’s many kind friends and helpers. Eightyone new members had been admitted; the daily average luncheon attendance during the year was 91; and the year ended with a credit balance of £3 Is lud, and it was here stated that this was mainly due to the capable management of Mrs. French, the club’s manageress, who takes such a keen interest in the work of the club. On behalf of the committee Miss E. Fleming, executive president, presented some attractive books to Miss A. C. Green, the retiring secretary, and Miss G. E. Coldliam, who had been forced through illness to give up the secretaryship shortly after the previous annual meeting. Miss Fleming spoke a few words of appreciation of the work done by them. Mrs. Garrard, president of the Y.W.C.A., was present, and in speaking of the good work done by the club, said she was pleased to see the interest the association and the club took in each other. Miss Statham expressed appreciation of Miss E. Fleming’s untiring interest in the welfare of the club. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs. A. M. Ferguson; vice-presidents, Mrs. Todd-S«iith, Mrs. G. H. Wilson, Miss Cousins and Miss Cox; executive president, Miss E. Fleming; executive vice-presidents, Misses Brown and Green; hon. secretary, Miss Pilkington; hon. treasurer. Miss Harbutt; committee, Misses Wilson, Emerson, Goodfellow, Woodward, Steele, Rosser, Coldham and Begg (ex officio).
