GROWING OF WHEAT
SOUTHERN GROWER s ' ANXIOUS WELLINGTON, Thursday. The anxiety which Southern farmers are feeling in anticipation of Government assistance with their wheat crops was reflected in the remarks of the Hon. D. Buddo, member for Kaiapoi, who said in the House to-day that the farmers of Canterbury and Otago produced 90 per cent, of the wheat grown in New Zealand last year. They would like to know what assistance they were going to get from the State following the statements made by the Prime Minister some time ago that the Government would assist the growers. There was no demand for excessive concessions, Mr. Buddo said. The anxiety that was felt was in the direction of uncertainty of what line they would pursue. The farmers would not give up the production of fat lambs and grow wheat if they were not assured that the price to be received from wheat would justify the change. He hoped members of the House would he given an opportunity of discussing the question at an early date in the current session.
