VAUDEVILLE AND PICTURES Never has Mae Murray appeared in a picture that compares in artistry with “Altars of Desire,” in which Conway Tearle plays the featured male role. This new production, which was directed by Christy Cabanne, will have its first showing to-night at the Prince Edward Theatre. “Altars of Desire” is a delightful combination of comedy and drama. Her role is a new type for Miss Murray, in that it depends largely for its appeal on subtlety and whimsical situations. The first half of the picture the star plays with a pretty insouciance, and in the latter scenes proves herself a magnificent dramatic actress. Conway Tearle plays the part of a young man who becomes enamoured of Clare against his better judgment. Tearle gives an excellent picture of a man torn between his heart and his mind. The story lends itself unusually to dramatic treatment. It is the story of a girl who, on her initial trip to Paris, meets and becomes fascinated by a French count. The following sequences are extremely dramatic and in the denouement comes a striking climax to the story. Andre Beranger and Robert Edeson are in the cast. A large vaudeville programme will also be presented, and as the second picture feature, “Devil's Island, with Pauline Frederick in the leading role, will be screened-
