CHANCE FOR CHINESE
EARNING THEIR FARES DEPORTATOIN POSTPONED Two young Chinamen, who have stayed in New Zealand beyond the time allowed in their temporary permits, cannot leave the country because they are unable to pay their passage money. When they were charged at the Police Court this morning, their counsel, Mr. Purdle, suggested that they should be allowed to work in a garden for two months, the accumulation of wages then being sufficient to pay their boat fares. Mr. A. W. Penn, Collector of Customs, said that such an arrangement was not approved by his head office. The magistrate, Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., however, adjourned the case until •October 14 to give accused a chance to get away.
