Poet's Corner

A SOUTH SEA SUNSET (Written for THE SUN.) The storm teas over, and the west toinds blew, The great, black, ominous clouds had ceased to pour Their teeming burden on the thirsty earth; Behind the feathery palms the fiery sun Made rich 'mosaic in the dappled W est — Of gold and ruby and green malachite, Making a glory of the sullen banks Of riven cloud-iurack and the smoky wreaths Of swirling vapour, fain, yet loth to melt Into the blue immensity of heaven, 'Whilst on the barrier reef, in muffled thunder, The great green combers intermittently Flinging high in air white clouds of the salt sea-spray, Sang solemn requiems to the dying day. So, when Life’s storms are stayed, and the long, long path That leads us on and on to Avalon, The vale of fadeless flowers and deathless palms. Gives pause at length to weary pilgrim feet, And bids us cross at last the Great • Divide — God scnd us calm and light at eventide. F. W. CHRISTIAN. Palmerston North. SHADOWS. (Written for THE SUN.) Shadows are beautiful things, ’cause I found One of them dancing and hugging the ground Under a little wee sycamore tree. “Now I will catch you/ 1 I said to the elf. “Silver and slippery ” (this to myself), “Hopeless and hoppity, come here to me/” He fled through my fingers and quivered and broke Into dancing, the way of all fairy-made folk; 1 frowned, then 1 laughed—only God understands. Trying to catch at impossible things Like beautiful shadows with beautiful wings, With ten clumsy fingers and two clumsy hands! MARNA SERVICE. Dunedin.
