Devonport Shield Hockey Matches
FORECAST OF GAMES The Devonport Shield hockey competitions, which will be continued at Remuera to-morrow, vt-ill provide keen contests in many of the fixtures, but the heavy rain and the consequent effect on the playing fields will preclude any possibility of scientific stickwork. Somerville seniors are to cross sticks with Mount Eden, and a vigorous struggle should result in a win for the Somerville men if Mount Eden cannot make a better showing than it did last week against Varsity. It can be taken fairly safely that Somerville will pull the game off even though three of its star men are away on tour. Somerville Colts and Varsity Colts will make a willing go of it, and if the students can maintain their splendid form as displayed last Saturday, the Whites will be fully extended to win. A hard struggle should end in favour of SomeiVille. UNIVERSITY SHOULD WIN University should have little difficulty in lowering Epiphany’s colours if the bookmen can field the excellent team which downed Eden last Satur-
day. Epiphany will make a big effort, but the students should have little difficulty in going up two points. Wesley v. Training College is a difficult speculation, and in view of College’s surprise defeat at the sticks of Epiphany, the Greens may lower the teachers’ standing. In view of Wesley’s greater experience in senior work it should come out victorious, but it will be by a small margin. Ateta v. St. Luke’s should provide a close, hard match, with final honours to Areta by a goal or two.

Money in Cricket. —The annual report of the New South Wales Cricket Association puts that body in the capitalistic class, for it is now worth £30,165 16s Bd. Receipts from Sydney Cricket Ground were £2,258 16s Gd, and the Sheffield games yielded £2,025 10s 4d, while rents from the association’s George Street building totalled £3,327 2s 6d. Profits on the English tour brought in £2,333 6s Bd. One pleasant feature of the report, which does not appear in many others of the kind, is the fatness of the cricketers’ fund. This now totals £1,840 15s Id, and only £lO had to be paid out last year. With all that brass standing on its edges, it is now up to the association to persuade the board lof trustees to cut something off the | Ned Kelly charges for admission to the Sydney Cricket Ground, which have i been a sore point with the paying publ lie for a long time.
Y.M.C.A. CRICKET CLUB S ANNUAL REPORT The report of the Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club, to be presented to the annual meeting on Thursday, September 1. gives cause for much satisfaction, the club having had a most successful year. At the invitation of the Auckland Cricket Association, a senior team was entered. Bowley, of Sussex, being allotted to the team. Results proved that the team quite justified its inclusion, as out of eight matches played four were won. one drawn, and three lost, this placing the team in third position with University. As three matches were played without Bowley, this was encouraging. R. Riddols received the bat presented by Mr. J. Watts for the best bowling performance during February, and also came second in the averages of nil Auckland bowlers. Outside Bowley, J. H. Miller headed the batting averages, closely followed by A. Lewis. One of the reasons of success was the consistency of the batting. The club generally performed consistently, the second grade team being bracketed winners for the championship, and the fourth grade team was defeated in the final by Herald. Prospects for the coming season are most encouraging, several outstanding new players being available.
