THE VETERANS’ HOME

Sir. — A letter appeared in THE SUN recently on the treatment of the residents at the Veterans’ Home. A deputation from the Mew Zealand ExService League paid a visit to the home on Sunday morning to inquire into tire matter. We spent the whole of the morning there, and herewith give our views of things as we found them. After having had a talk with some of the “boys,” we made the acquaintance of Major Knutsford, the superintendent, who immediately offered to show us round. The place is, as to cleanliness, A model which many other institutions would do well to follow. As to gardening for the men, a gardener is employed because no one there will do any. At the s f ln }° time there is ground for them it they wish to work it. There is also a shed full of wood available for anyone who is looking for a little exercise which, needless to say, is not rushed. After having a private chat with some of the inmates, I was told they consider their home as being second to none in Auckland, which is
