In handing the winner the gold medal, which accompanies the cup, Mr. McPhail said the judges had been greatly impressed with the merit of the essay, which they had described as “remarkably good.” Congratulations were extended by the Mayor of Northcote, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, and an address was also given by the headmaster, Mr. W. J. Wernham. Last year the subject was “Our Flag and the Part it Played in Colonial Expansion,” the winner being Miss Flora Macdonald, of Cornwall Park School.
