AFTER FIVE YEARS
MR. HAMMILL RETIRES LEAGUE CHAIRMANSHIP MR. G. RHODES APPOINTED AT last night’s meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby League, the resignation was received of the chairman, Mr. W. J. Hammill, and Mr. G. Rhodes, who has for some years been officially connected with the Auckland and New Zealand Leagues, was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr. Hammill said that it was with deep regret that he had made the decision, as he had made excellent friends among the delegates during his term of office. He accepted the
chairmanship of the Auckland League in 1922 when the assets of the League amounted to £4,030. To-day the assets were quoted at £11,280. This was something any sporting body would be proud of. The progress, season by season, had been steady and sure and the “gates” this year had been £2OO better, compared with the same period last season which was then recognised as a record. "With efficient control, the game could be kept to the fore of all sports, where it undoubtedly was today. . Various delegates made mention of the services of Mr. Hammill, who had worked hard in the interests of the code. Mr. Stallworthy said that the inaguration of the League code in the primary schools of Auckland would be a lasting monument to the services rendered bv Mr. Hammill. “It is through Mr. Hammill the League leads in the sports of Auckland to-day,” said Air. Davidson. It was unanimously decided to confer the life membership of the Auckland League upon the retiring chairman and his resignation was accepted with regret. As M.r. George Rhodes took the chair, Mr. Hammill in addressing him said: “You want a stiff back, and you want to be hard.”
