SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR SETTLING THE DETAILS Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met this evening, the chairman, Mr. S. S. Dean, presiding. The matter of the tour to South Africa next year was considered in committee and upon resuming in open meeting it was reported that it had been decided to inform the South African Union that New Zealand was adverse to playing more than 21 matches on the tour, but was agreeable to play four test matches, with a week’s rest before each test match. The team would leave New Zealand on May 11, arrive at Sydney on May 15, arrive Melbourne May 19, arrive Durban June 11, and arrive Capetown June 16. The first match of the tour would be played on June 23 and the last on September 15, the team leaving South Africa on the return voyage on September 22.
The Wanganui Union asked that its match with Manawhenua on September 3 should be declared a Ranfurly Shield game. It has advised Manawhenua to this effect. This request was granted provisionally. Taranaki also made a similar request concerning a game with Manawhenua on August 31 and the fixture was confirmed. The East Coast Rugby Union asked for a r tiling as to what constituted
“residence.” One of its players worked in the country and returned to town for the week-ends at his parents’ home. The question was should such player play for the country district or for the town district. It was decided to reply that all players should declare their place of residence and abide by the declaration. REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY SOUTH ISLAND MATCHES Press Association. OAMARU, Wednesday. Tile Maori touring Rugby team defeated North Otago to-day by 13 points to 6. The weather was good and the attendance numbered about 4,000. Both teams played spectacular and open Rugby, the visitors establishing a lead of 10 points to 3 in the first spell. In the second spell the local representatives had slightly the better of the game, keeping the Maoris penned in their territory most of the time. Failure at goal-kicking was responsible for North Otago’s defeat. SOUTHLAND TOURING TEAM TIMAKU, Wednesday. The touring representative Southland Rugby team played South Canterbury this afternoon and were defeated by 26 points to 13. The weather was ideal and the ground in good Tlle attendance was estimated at 2,000. Tries were scored for Southland by McLeod, Murray and Roberts, two being converted by Nicholson. For South Canterbury tries were scored bv Ritchie, Southgate, R. Scott (2), A Lawson (2) and Strang. The lastnamed kicked a penalty goal and converted one try.
HAMILTON CHAMBER NEW OFFICERS ELECTED Press Association. HAMILTON, To-day. The annual meeting of the Harnilton Chamber of Commerce was held last night, when the year’s work was reviewed. Mr. P. H. Clapham was returned as president for a further term and a new executive was elected as follows:—-Messrs. W. H. Hooker, A. Morris, F . House, A. M. Bisley, D. Seymour and J. Sykes.
