LET DOWN
CAWNPORE’S FAILURE PURCHASER OF RUNNYMEDE STILL UNLUCKY As far as his racehorse buying ventures are concerned, Mr. T. C. Trautwein seems to have the anti-Midas touch. He paid a huge price for Runnymede after the New Zealander had suggested that he was one right out of the box by running the mile and a-half for the N.Z. Berby in record time for Australasia. Runnymede hasn’t won for his new owner, and as a matter of fact hasn’t run a really good race. On Friday of last week, Mr. Trautwein bought another seeming giltedged proposition. Cawnpore looked a good thing for the following day’s Flying at Rosehill, so despite the big figure given—rumour credits Mr. Trautwein with paying a huge price considering Cawnpore’s form—it looked as if he would get an early return of at least part of the purchase money. NOT HEAVILY BACKED However, no fortunes were plunged on Cawnpore in the betting ring, perhaps due to the fact that he had drawn a W'ide post position, and he was at a longer price at the start of the race than at any other time in the betting. Support for Boaster, who was backed down, also had its effect on the favourite’s price. Kelso’s connections, considering that their champion
