ARMIES OF GERMANY
FRANCE UNEASY GROWING EXPENDITURE NEW MOVES FEARED ly Cable.—Preee Association.—Copyright BF.RLIN, Tuesday. Reports from Berlin regarding the proposed reorganisation of the Reichswehr, including the establishment of a strong reserve, are again perturbing French critics. The latter are alarmed by Germany’s Increasing expenditure on national defence. It is pointed out that since 1924 the German Army budget has risen from £17,960,000 to £24,050,000, and the Navy budget from £4,950,000 to £11,000,000. It is contended that on the basis of the Peace Treaty the present military expenditure should not exceed a maximum of £12,500,000 a year, ~nd naval expenditure £5,650,000. French critics assert that the increase in Germany’s military expenditure is only to be accounted for by the assumption that new projects have already been launched for which large additional funds are required. The question is also asked why Germany has a larger contingent of naval cadets than France, and why, out of a total naval personnel of 14,914, the proportion should be 4,979 officers to 9,935 men.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
