SPEEDY SEAPLANES

TESTS IN BRITAIN A THRILLING SPECTACLE By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Tuesday. The two British airplanes which will compete in the race for the Schneider Cup at Venice in September had a trial flight at- Cowes. The spectacle was most thrilling. The onlookers first saw a distant black speck and the engine was barely audible. The sound grew like the rushing vision of a nightmare, until there was a deafening crash of the 800 horsepower engine 50 yards above the spectators’ heads. There was just a flashing glimpse of the blue machine and then it was out of sight. One of the pilots said that if he had looked out at either side of the cockpit his head would have been blown off. The engine enhaust makes it a furnace. If any part of the pilot’s body were to be exposed to the intense heat the skin would be scorched. The machines have already been designated “thunderbolts.”—A. and N.Z.
