PASSIN’ THROUGH COMES BACK
Grand National Contests Second Day of Winter Meeting Note Springs a Surprise (Special to. THE SVX.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. THE second (Grand National Hurdles) day of the Winter meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was continued to-day at Riccarton in fine but dull weath'er. The track is in fair order, and there is a large attendance. The following are the results: —
HUNT CLUB CUP 21 miles. A —ROYAL FASHION, 10.8 1 3—OS TERM AN, 12.4 2 S—ROYAL WINK, 10.7 3 All started. Four lengths. Time, 5 25 1-5. The Babe ran off and Hynerion fell. WOOLSTON HANDICAP 6 fur. B—NOTE, 9.13 1 3—KALOS, 10.9 2 2 BRONSTELL, 9.4 3 S—ROYAL HEAD, 9.3 4 All started. Hoylake was favourite. Note led all the way, being attended on to the course proper by Royal Head and Kalos. Nothing could get near the leader in the run in, although Kalos was a possibility at the half distance. Note won comfortably by a neck, and paid a nice doublefigure dividend. Two lengths separated second and third. Time, 1.15 1-5. BEAUFORT STEEPLECHASE 21 miles. 5 PASSIN’ THROUGH, 10.5 (H. Burt) 1 3 ZIRCON, 10.6 (W.J. Bowden) .. 2 6 TUKI, 11.0 (,T. Humphries) .. .. 3 2—PETER MAXWELL, 10.13 (A. E. Ellis) 4 All started. Won by four lengths. Time, 5.16. Latest race results will be found in the Stop Press news as they come to hand. Passin’ Through Beats Zircon Kapuna led to the first jump from Isla Bank and Peter Maxiwell, Passin’ Through, who was started a couple of lengths behind the field, being at the end of the bunch, with San Forte already tailed off. Then Isla Bank quickly ran to the front, and took the sod Avail ahead of Kapuna, Hokioi, Kipling, Zircon, Tuki and Passin’ Through. Jumping beautifully, Isla Bank piloted the field over the stand double, following in order being Zircon, Kapuna, Peter Maxwell, Hokioi, Passin’ Through and Tuki. A little further on Passin’ Through went on to make up some of his leeway, and along the back had moved up into fourth place, San Forte at this stage being over a furlong in the rear. Six furlongs "from home Isla Bank, Hokioi, Zircon and Passin’ Through were almost on terms, with Peter Maxwell and Tuki heading the remainder. Coming into the straight the last time Passin’ Through and Zircon were in charge from l-lokioi, Tuki, Peter Maxwell and Isla Bank, and at the next couple of fences Hokioi was nearly down, Mcßrearty making two great recoveries. Passin’ Through did best from the last fence, and went on to score a popular victory in a good finish with Zircon. Tuki finished well in third place, and then came Peter Maxwell.
Kipling' fell at the fence at the bottom of the straight the first time, and Maunga came down also. The latter’s rider, McSweeney, was some time in rising, but it was probable that he was not severely hurt.
NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE USEFUL TRACK WORK The sand was the only available ! track at Ellerslie this morning - , and though several gallops were registered nothing in the way of fast time was recorded. Thursby was not in a good mood and was easily beaten by Star Comet over seven furlongs, the last four taking 57 4-5. Mountain Guide and Michael after covering a quarter of a mile in 29 4-5, took 1.27 4-5 to get over six furlongs. FIERY LAD FINISHES IN FRONT Fiery Lad, Porticus, Charitane and Diamond Queen finished as named over seven furlongs in 1.37. They registered 40 for the first three furlongs. A number of others galloped mostly at half and three-quarter pace and were not clocked. JUMPERS IMPROVING The General Lamont hunter in F. Stenning’s stable, in his last few schooling lessons, did not impress, but when ridden by R. Anderson, in a bout over three hurdles at Ellerslie this morning, he jumped well and no complaints could be forthcoming with the manner in which he cleared the obstacles. Anderson may pilot him in the Hunters’ Hurdles at the Pakuranga meeting. Importer and Simplicitas gave a good display over six hurdles when ridden by J. Sharkey and T. Chaplin respectively. JOTTINGS Mashoar, who claims an engagement in the Hunters’ Hurdles and Ladies’ Bracelet at the Pakuranga meeting, is due to arrive early next week. He is a full brother to Bahama. Golden Wedding was on the track this morning, and though she is somewhat light in condition, nevertheless is very bright. She -was only allowed to go at a very slow pace once round the sand track. The Lucullus —Avon Park two-year-old filly in F. Gilchrist’s stable has been named Avon Court. Quinvardia, who claims an engagement at the Pakuranga meeting, appears to be rather sore and may not be seen at her best. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS T. Chaplin has been booked to ride Sea Comet and Diamond Queen, and C. Hastings will pilot Royal Bonus in their forthcoming engagements.
