SOUTH AFRICAN VETERAN

THE LATE MR. W. F. HUNT A veteran volunteer soldier, and an old resident of New Zealand, Mr William Francis Hunt, has died at the age Born in York, England, Mr. Hunt came to the Dominion with his parents m the ship Carngoon in 1863, and settled in the Mangonui district, where lie engaged in farming for several years In 1876 he joined the Hamilton troop of the Waikato Volunteer Cavalry At the outbreak of the South African War Mr Hunt endeavoured to enlist, but, as lie was over the age limit, he was not accepted. He then went to Australia and joined the Bushmen’s Contingent and saw considerable service. He remained in South Africa after the war, and for a number of years engaged in mining and farming. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and the Queen's and King’s South African medals. When the Great War broke out, Mr. Hunt volunteered for service with the English forces, but was rejected, and joined the staff of the Walton-on-Thames Military Hospital, London. He finally returned to New Zealand in 1916. and since 1925 he had been an inmate of the Veterans’ Home. Mount Roskill. The funeral takes place at the Waikaraka Cemetery this afternoon.
