A BUILDING RECORD
YORKSHIRE INSURANCE STRUCTURE ONE STOREY EVERY FIVE DAYS What constitutes a building record for New Zealand, and probably Australia, is that effected by the Fletcher Construction Company in its erection of the Yorkshire Insurance Building in Shortland Street, a concrete structure of eight storeys.
The work on this £53,000 job was commenced on November 30 last, and by April 17 it had been completed to the first floor. The foundations, except in one instance when the contractors had to excavate to a depth of 50ft., are resting *on solid rock. On June 21, barely two months later, the building had risen to its specified height of eight storeys. This works out at one storey every five days. The plasterers are at present engaged on the interior of the building and the work will be finally completed by the end of December next, this being three months under the contract time. A special feature of this record is the fact that up to March only an average of 26 carpenters and labourers were employed, and from then until June 1 there was an average of 42 carpenters and labourers.
