MOTOR-CYCLING

NEWS AND NOTES SPORTS MOTOR-CYCLE CLUB The monthly meeting of the club was • held in the Chamber of Commerce. \ Discussion took place regarding the club’s application for affiliation with the New Zealand Auto-Cycle Union. Speaking on behalf of affiliation, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup said "the club had everything to gain and nothing to lose.” Club riders competing in speed events and being registered A.C.U. riders, would derive benefit from the union’s benevolent fund in case of accident. It was also suggested that the time has arrived when the A.C.U. should interest itself as a parent body in other branches of motor-cycle activity besides racing. * * * The ladies’ committee of the cliub have arranged for a dance and social which will take place on Thursday August 25. PILLION RIDING The club has made an active move toward having the pillion riding restrictions modified in the city. Mr. T. N. Holmden, who is representing the club, advises that the test case, which was to have been held on Wednesday, had been postponed for a fortnight pending satisfactory negotiations with the City Council. Appreciation of the willingness of the Council to meet the motor-cyclists has been expressed, the feeling being that the club would prefer to settle the matter by friendly discussion rather than resort to the court. * * * The members of the club enjoyed a very pleasant run last Sunday to Ilunua Gorge and Falls. RELIABILITY TRIAL All preparations are now complete for the 250 miles reliability trial which ! will start on Saturday next to Hamil- j ton. thence to Cambridge, Matamata, | Te Aroha, Paeroa and return via the ■ Hauraki Plains. Competitors will start in pairs, the first machines being due I to leave the Civic Square at 12.45 p.m. j A check will be installed at Pokeno and the night will be spent at Cambridge. Leaving again at 7 a.m. on Sunday the remainder of the jonrney will be completed in the day. All by-laws and local body regulations must be complied with and even on the best road 2 5 m.p.h. is the highest average speed allowed. Condition of machines will be taken into account and tool boxes are sealed points are deducted for breaking the. seals and speeding or arriving before the stated time. An entry has been received from J. W. Gardner, of Waiuku, who although having only one leg rides his Indian quite creditably and should put up a good performance, as he is familiar with most of the road along the route. Entries will be received at the following garages:—J. and W. White, Goodwin and Morecroft, Skeates and White, Auckland Cycle and Motor Depot and British Cycles Ltd. * * * The new model O.E.C. motor-cycle referred to in last week’s “Motordom” is, we understand, really an extra model machine, manufactured in addition to the present standard models. This new model will probably not be available in New Zealand, except to special order, but it should be noted that the standard models O.E.C. have Sin. ground clearance, whereas this new model has only the English 3£in. clearance. * * * WELLINGTON BEACH RACES At the Wellington Beach flying mile championships remarkable times were put up by the Harley-Davidson team of riders. They won all four classes, including the side-car class. Williamson in his class putting up the great time of nearly 79 miles an hour with a side-car outfit. Mangham’s machine was an ordinary stock model pocket valve HarleyDavidson, the same model as the Harley ridden by Les. C. Monkman in the New Brighton beach flying mile, and on which he did the great time of nearly 104 miles an hour. These times constitute a New Zealand record. The events were electrically timed. The Harley successes were: H. Mangham, Harley twin 7-9 h.p. first 35 l-ssec, 102.27 miles an hour. H. Morgan, 350 class first Harley 21 h.p., 45 3-ssec, 79 miles an hour. H. Morgan, 500 class first Harley 21 h.p. 45 3-ssec, 79 miles an hour. T. Willimason, side-car class first Harley side-car outfit, 46sec, 78.26 miles an hour.
