ADIEU POLIN!
JOYOUS SINGER’S EXIT
Polin is dead. Those who knew Paris during the quarte.r-century before the war will remember this witty, clever, joyous singer of topical songs in the cabarets and music-halls of the Gay City. His popularity was immense up to the outbreak of the war, when illness put an end to his career. His were soldier songs of the old French Army. His great triumph was his last, when, a few weeks before the war, he sang his song “La Madelon,” All France was soon singing it, and it became the French soldiers’ “Tipperary.” Polin, whose real name was Pierre Paul Marsales, was also a great actor, for in the latter part of his career he appeared with great success with such stars as Jeanne Granier and Lucien Guitry. He was 63.
