MARKETING OF DAIRY PRODUCE
AMALGAMATED DAIRIES SUBSTITUTE FOR CONTROL Under the hands of the farmers as a whole the dairy control proved a failure. The board gave in when, according to many, success was in sight. Rising' out of the wreck? of the board’s failure is the Amalgamated Dairies’ Ltd. A private organisation registered to-day, this company, under the directorship of Mr. William Goodfellow, has entered into an arrangement with the New Zealand Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, Ltd., to handle all overseas sales of its produce for the next five years. Several other companies have also decided to take advantage of the facilities offered by the new concern.
The company was formed, said Mr. Goodfellow, when interviewed by a SUN man to-day, for the express purpose of undertaking the supervision of sales of dairy produce in the United Kingdom and for the marketing of both buter and cheese in all other countries where f.o.b. and/or c.i.f. sales had to be made. In short, the Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., would endeavour by voluntary means to accomplish the work on behalf of the industry which the Dairy Control Board had failed to do by absolute control. An agreement had been entered into by the Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., with the New Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., to market all exportable dairy products manufactured by that concern for a period of five years, and other co-operative dairy companies would, in future, have the same marketing opportunities. It was proposed to make year to year agreements with the factories and to pol dairy produce with that of the New Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co. ship for ship and grade for grade. Facilities would also be given factories to make f.o.b. or c.i.f. sales without financial commitment. In conclusion, Mr. Goodfellow said that the company had already been promised a considerable amount of dairy produce, and he anticipated that quite a substantial proportion of the total output from the country would soner or later come under the company’s control. The memorandum shows that the shares have been subscribed as follow: — New Zealand Co-op Dairy Co., Ltd 20,000 William Goodfellow 10,000 J. B.
