SPORTS CLUB FOR POINT CHEVALIER
RESIDENTS ACCEPT OFFER COMMITTEE SET UP A meeting of residents held in the Point Chevalier Hall last evening agreed to form a sports club to accept and develop Mr. Hollyburton Johnstone’s offer of acres of land. Mr. M. J. Coyle, who presided, outlined the steps taken by an informal committee of citizens to secure a sports ground. Those steps ultimately resulted in Mr. Hallyburton Johnstone's offer, of which Mr. Coyle gave the details and pointed out the wisdom of accepting. It would be a great benefit, he said, to the children and the youth of the district. Mr. Coyle also discussed the financial obligations entailed under the agreement which had been drawn up to secure the passing of the property to the club when it should be formed. Mr. F. C. Jordan, a life trustee appointed by Mr. Johnstone, supported Mr. Coyle. Bowling greens were his business at the meeting, said Mr. J. Hardley, president of the iN’ew Zealand Bowling Association. He hoped that Point Chevalier residents would form a club that evening and join the great brotherhood of bowlers. A motion expressing appreciation of Mr. Johnstone’s gift was carried unanimously. COMMITTEE SELECTED In asking the meeting to select a committee of 11 the chairman asked that the members should be proposed from as wide a radius as possible. As a result the following committee was appointed: Mrs. T. Courtenay, Mrs. R. G. Donaldson and Mrs. F. G. Rose, the Rev. W. H. Gillam, Messrs. F. Dyson, C. PI. Solomon, T. Courtenay, A. M. Raing, C. Bromley, J. Brain, and T. G. Storey. After the meeting a donation of £5 was made to the promoters of the club by Mr. Thomas Mclvor, an old resident of the district.
