BIG SEAPLANE RACE
BRITAIN’S BOLD BID GREAT SPEED REQUIRED SIX MILES A MINUTE British Wireless—Press Assn Copyright Reed. IX a.m. RUGBY, Friday. A big British effort will be made this year to win the Schneider Cup race, which will take place at Venice at the end of next month. Three types of high-speed seaplanes, built to the order of the Air Minis try, have recently been undergoing flying tests at the Royal Air Force stations at Calshot and Felixstowe. Air Vice-Marshal Scarlett, commanding the coastal area, will have command of the British pilots, who will be officers of the Royal Air Force. The men have undergone a searching training in high-speed flying. A speed of something like six miles a minute may be required to win the race. Opposition will be provided by the United States, which claims to have evolved a seaplane capable of a speed of over 300 miles an hour, and bj r Italy. The race was won last year by Italy at a speed of 246£ miles an hour. There will be neither French nor German entries. —A. and N.Z.
