“OPERATING COSTS"

Sir, — “It must not be forgotten for a moment that the operations of the trams are 70 per cent higher than prewar,” so says Councillor Allum. That’s the very thing everyone is grumbling about, and goes to prove, from the chairman’s own mouth, what a poorlymanaged concern our tram service is. Railway fares are no higher; taxicab fares are 60 per cent, cheaper; so why in the name of reason are tram costs 70 per cent, higher? Everyone except the Council knows the reason—extravagance, monopoly, and ineptitude. HAROLD SCHMIDT.
