BAY OF ISLANDS CLUB TAXATION EXCEEDS STAKES The annual general meeting of the Bay of Islands Racing Club was held in the Orange Hall at Kawakawa. Mr. T. J. V. Dunlop, president, presided over a fair attendance. In submitting the statement of accounts for the financial year, which closed on March 31, 1927, the president said the committee had much pleasure in again congratulating members on the continued prosperity and progress of the club. In spite of the adverse financial conditions obtaining at the time of the last meeting the club had again shown a profit and the stakes distributed amounted to £645, an increase over last year. Government taxation was still very heavy, the amount contributed totalling £666 6s, which exceeded the amount given away in stakes. During the past year a. number of improvements had been carried out, chief among which was the roofing of the grandstand and patrons were now well catered for in this respect. AVOIDING CUT IN STAKES The committee realised the fact that owing to the pronounced general reduction in the totalisator turnover, it would be its duty to curtail expenses where possible. At the same time, it was hoped to be able to avoid a reduction in stakes. The club was unfortunate in losing the services of its secretary, Mr. C. H. Puttiek, after the meeting in January, and a suitable presentation was made to him as a recognition for past ser-
vices. Since January the duties of secretary had been filled by the president. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Hon. W. Stewart, M.L.C., Mr. A. Bell, M.P., and Mr. Fred Andre wes; president, Hon. V. IT. Reed, M.L.C.; vice-presi-dent, Mr. G. L. Leaity; secretary, Mr. T. J. V Dunlop; treasurer, Mr J. F. Wall; auditor, Mr. E. H. Blundell: committee, Messrs. L. H. Irving, C. F. C. Miller. A. H. Morgan. W A. Pearson and B. C. Squire; members’ stewards, Messrs. J. P. English, A. H. Morgan and R. Bridge.
